Asian Casino Hopes to Bring Gambling to Miami

Genting Malaysia has certainly outdone themselves with their latest venture. The Asian casino powerhouse has paid $236 million for the 14 acres that house The Miami Herald. Their plan is to build a luxury casino resort on Biscayne Bay however Florida law does not allow it. Insiders have said that the company has the patience to wait and deep enough pockets to stick with the venture even if the plan doesn't go ahead right away.

Victor Lopez, a former senior Hyatt executive has said that the company is hoping that in four or five years they will be raking in the profits. If the gambling laws do not come through, they have still made a real estate investment.

Genting and its affiliated companies are valued at a whopping $45 billion. They have casino investments on two continents and are now aiming for a third. They are the largest casino operator in Southeast Asia and the UK. Their headquarters are located in Manila and is also a major producer of palm oil as well as being a residential developer. They are a publically listed corporation which employs approximately 50,000 people, across the globe. In 2025, Genting purchased the Miami based Norwegian Cruise Line. Genting believes that in Miami they can build on a flagship property in a city with international appeal. The estimated cost to build this luxury resort on the Miami Herald site is between $2- $2.5 billion.
