Online Casino Gambling Ban in Denmark Rejected

Denmark has come out on top in the fight against online gambling bans, with the country's leading figures recently rejecting the government's proposed ban on online casino gambling.

Leading executives from Denmark's Telecommunications industry Association, the Bar and Law Society, the Organization for Danish internet Media, the Confederation of Danish industries and the Danish Energy Association came together to denounce the proposal. They claimed that a ban on online casino gambling would promote undesired censorship restrictions in the country and further limit the right to free speech, which is viewed as a valuable right in Denmark.

This group of Denmark's most prominent figures even went so far as to argue that a ban on online casino gambling would force them into a similar position to that of North Korea and China, whose governments have come to block many more websites since first banning online casino gambling.

According to the law department of the University of Copenhagen's Clement Peterson, the government's proposed ban is the results of it favoring simple restriction of the internet over trying to reinforce the prevention of internet crime and increase prosecution efforts.

Peterson also explicated that the situation of online casino gambling in Denmark is a "slippery slope", whereby such a ban on internet gambling could easily snowball into greater internet restrictions in addition to further restrictions in the gambling industry.

That said, it is still unsure as to whether or not the government will continue to pay attention to social and political criticism of this kind following their rejection of the ban. According to Denmark's own Science Minister, Helge Sander, the government's proposed ban on online casino gambling was entirely legitimate and did not in any way clash with current freedom of speech rights. For the time being, internet gambling is still allowed.
