Mysterious conflict between Cryptologic and Marvel

Two weeks ago on April 26th Cryptologic released a press release titled "Notification of Arbitration Proceedings". The title contradicts the content of the actual release. With Cryptologic being such a large, globally operating company it is not surprising that something could go wrong with its function, however, no one expected that the arbitration proceedings were initiated against a company that is so closely associated with Cryptologic that they are almost synonymous.

The press release read. "Cryptologic Limited … announces that arbitration proceedings have been formally commenced by Wagerlogic Ltd. (a wholly owned subsidiary of Cryptologic Limited) against Marvel Enterprises Inc. and Marvel Enterprises B.V. (collectively "Marvel"), under the JAMS Comprehensive Rules in New York City, USA." It went on to say, "These proceedings concern Wagerlogic Ltd.'s claims that Marvel has committed material breaches of certain provisions of its agreement with Wagerlogic Ltd. relating to the licensing of Marvel comic book characters to Wagerlogic Ltd."
Cryptologic did not specify what these material breaches are, but did make clear that they have tried to solve the matter without resorting to arbitration. However, since this was not possible they had to resort to arbitration proceedings against Marvel in order to protect their financial interests and licensing rights.

There is no work from Cryptologic about what has actually gone wrong, and since this is one of the longest lasting partnerships in the online casino community speculation is rife. Last March Playtech formed a deal with Marvel to develop online slot games based on their recent film characters, in the last five months Playtech have released five games based on superheroes already in Cryptologic Mavel games. However, in June 2025 Cryptologic and Marvel extended their agreement. So now everyone is waiting to find out what went wrong.
