Sheldon Adelson pushes for Indian gaming resorts.

Sheldon Adelson, the Las Vegas Sands owner, made headlines yet again this week after urging India to take an interest in the gambling resort market. Adelson, who has been pushing for involvement for a period of more than two years, has been consistently dismissed by the government in spite of his efforts. Adelson has argued that significant intervention is needed to prevent untaxed gaming revenue from falling into the hands of online casinos and illegal operators.

Adelson is pushing for the development of larger casino complexes in large cities such as Mumbai and New Delhi. New complexes will be modelled on the existing resorts which have become some of the most popular gaming sites in the world. The Singapore Marina Bay Casino, for instance, currently boasts a significant number of Indian customers suggesting that this particular branding appeals to Indian clientele. The Venetian Macau holds a similar appear and depends on a large Indian contingent. Adelson argues that the new facilities would specifically attract middle-and upper-class citizens – a far cry from the illegal venues which escape proper regulation. Such services would be accompanied by luxury facilities including spas, restaurants and ballrooms to accommodate its visitors making for a high quality service which would eliminate illegal activity.

Commenting on the situation, Adelson accused the government of failing to address an increasingly corrupt market. "There are thousands of underground gambling holes", he stated. "People bet on cricket, horses, so why not use it as a legitimate source of income and employment". It remains to be seen how talks will progress as Adelson makes a powerful case for change.
