Online Casino Gambling Ban Implemented in Norway

Norway, one of the countries in the world with the highest internet usage, has recently imposed a complete ban on online casino gambling. According to the new law, online gambling may be permitted only at the country's two government run state casinos – Norsk RIkstoto and Norsk Tipping – which are currently up and running. The law operates in the same way as the UIGEA in the United States – that is, it is directed at financial institutions such as banks and credit card companies, and prevents Scandinavians from playing at foreign casinos by denying them the ability to finance their online gambling.

Recent studies have shown that German players, who are also banned by their local laws from gambling at online casinos, still gamble online despite such laws. However, Norway does not appear to be changing them any time soon. As it is not a member of the European Union, its decision to ban online gambling and promote a monopoly environment for its state run online casinos is entirely within reason. The decision also stands in stark contrast to the online casino gambling environments currently existing in neighbouring countries, such as Sweden.

The current situation for online gamblers in Norway appears to be grim, with no indication of any possibility for change. Yes, players are still able to play at the state run online casinos, however they will be subject to whatever they are given, regardless of lack of variety, quality or service. Hopefully, government officials will open their eyes to the unfairness of the situation and make the necessary changes some time soon.
