Recent data published by H2 Gambling Capital shows that last year the online gambling industry grew by 12.5% following a trend opposite to that of the global economic recession. Last year a total of $29.95 billion was won by online gamers. Whilst 1.1% of this increase was due to the World Cup in South Africa, the industry would still have seen revenues increase by 11.4% had the World Cup not taken place.
Online bingo saw the largest growth with revenues up 28.4% to a total of £2.67 billion. Online casinos also saw a large growth with revenues up 13.3% to $6.24 billion. However, sports betting remained the largest sector and saw a growth of 10.8% with revenue at $12.06 billion.
Online poker saw the slowest growth, despite this revenues were still up 7.1% with $5.06 billion in profits, however H2 is expecting this number to fall as large poker rooms offer larger bonuses in order to compete with rival rooms. If it wasn't for the launch of the Italian and French poker markets then poker revenues would have actually fallen slightly last year.
H2's report also included information on the overall size of the online gambling industry. There are now less than 2,400 real money online gambling sites, about 160 less than the year before. It is expected that as the industry matures it will become more consolidated.
Overall the report shows that the online gambling industry is in good health. H2 said that they expect "low double-digit growth" over the coming years assuming that European nations such as Denmark, Belgium and Spain put regulatory schemes in place for gambling. Additionally it is expected that mobile gaming will see the most growth as Smartphones become more common.
